MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Government of Liberia, in partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has officially broken ground for the construction of a modern maternity hospital on Duport Road in Paynesville, marking a significant investment in the country’s maternal and newborn healthcare sector.

The planned facility, which will have a capacity of more than 100 beds, is expected to provide specialized healthcare services for mothers and infants. According to project details, the hospital will include delivery suites, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), laboratories, and operating theaters designed to strengthen maternal and child health services.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together senior government officials, health sector stakeholders, representatives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and community residents who welcomed the initiative as a major boost to healthcare delivery in the area.

Speaking during the ceremony, First Lady Kartumu Yarta Boakai described the project as a critical step toward addressing maternal and neonatal mortality in Liberia. She emphasized the importance of improving access to quality healthcare services for women and newborns, noting that the facility will provide safer conditions for childbirth and specialized care for vulnerable infants.

Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto also hailed the project as a priority initiative for the Ministry of Health. She said the new hospital aligns with the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare infrastructure and expand access to quality maternal health services.

Dr. Kpoto noted that the facility will help address longstanding challenges faced by major referral hospitals, particularly John F. Kennedy Medical Center and Redemption Hospital, which continue to experience increasing patient loads.

Once completed, the maternity hospital is expected to reduce pressure on existing healthcare facilities while improving access to specialized maternal and newborn care for thousands of residents in Paynesville and surrounding communities.

The Duport Road corridor, one of the fastest-growing residential areas in Montserrado County, has seen a significant increase in population over the years, creating a growing demand for healthcare services. Authorities believe the new hospital will play a vital role in meeting that demand and improving health outcomes for women and children.

The project represents a collaboration between the Government of Liberia and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, reflecting continued partnerships aimed at strengthening the country’s healthcare system and advancing efforts to reduce preventable maternal and infant deaths.

Construction is expected to commence following the groundbreaking, with health authorities expressing optimism that the facility will become a landmark institution for maternal and newborn healthcare in Liberia.
