MONROVIA, LIBERIA – The Government of Liberia has taken a major step toward improving maternal healthcare services with the groundbreaking ceremony for the country’s first-ever dedicated maternity hospital, which is set to be constructed in Paynesville.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, and was led by First Lady H.E. Kartumu Yarta Boakai, marking the official commencement of the long-anticipated project.
Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto unveiled the design of the proposed facility, known as the Duport Road Maternity Hospital, and described the development as a significant achievement for Liberia’s healthcare sector.
Sharing news of the project, Minister Kpoto expressed optimism about the impact the hospital will have on maternal and child healthcare across the country.
“So so good news. Get used to it. The proposed Duport Road Maternity Hospital,” the Health Minister stated while unveiling the design of the facility.
According to health authorities who spoke with Verity News, funding for the construction of the maternity hospital has already been secured, clearing one of the major hurdles that often delays large-scale public health infrastructure projects.
The planned hospital is expected to provide specialized maternity and reproductive health services, helping to address challenges related to maternal and newborn care in Liberia. The facility is also anticipated to ease pressure on existing hospitals and improve access to quality healthcare for women and children, particularly in Montserrado County and surrounding communities.
The project comes as the government continues efforts to strengthen Liberia’s healthcare system through investments in medical infrastructure, personnel, and specialized services.
Once completed, the Duport Road Maternity Hospital will become a landmark institution and the first hospital in Liberia dedicated exclusively to maternity and maternal healthcare services.
Further details regarding the construction timeline and expected completion date have not yet been disclosed by authorities.
