Monrovia, Liberia — A wave of determination and anticipation has taken over the Barclay Training Center (BTC), where hundreds of Liberians have gathered ahead of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) recruitment exercise set to begin on Monday, April 27, 2026.
From as early as Friday into the early hours of Saturday, hopeful applicants began arriving at the barracks, with many spending nights outdoors to secure a place in line. By Sunday morning, the crowd had grown significantly, reflecting the overwhelming interest among citizens eager to enlist.
Speaking to reporters, several individuals confirmed enduring long hours and difficult conditions, including sleeping outside the BTC gates, all driven by a shared ambition, to serve their country as members of the national army.
Despite their diverse backgrounds, the applicants are united by a common purpose: contributing to national defense and playing a role in safeguarding Liberia’s sovereignty. Their commitment has been underscored by their willingness to brave discomfort in pursuit of that goal.
The surge in interest comes amid increasing public calls for the AFL to strengthen its ranks, particularly following recent tensions along the Liberia-Guinea border, where reports of Guinean military encroachment raised national security concerns.
The AFL formally launched its current nationwide recruitment campaign on April 17, 2026, although initial plans for the intake date back to September 30, 2025. The detailed regional rollout was later announced in mid-April by the Chief of Public Affairs, Lt. Col. Stephen T. Tarplah.
According to the AFL, the recruitment drive is part of a broader strategy to expand and modernize the force, address workforce gaps caused by aging personnel and attrition, and promote inclusivity within its ranks. The long-term objective is to build a stronger, more capable military force of approximately 5,000 personnel.
As the official start date approaches, those gathered at BTC remain focused and hopeful, ready to seize the opportunity to serve and defend their nation.
