MONROVIA, Liberia — House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon has announced that China has committed US$7 million toward the construction of a new annex at the Capitol Building to provide additional office space for lawmakers expected to join the House of Representatives after the 2029 elections.
According to Koon, the proposed annex will create office facilities for 16 additional representatives as Liberia prepares for possible changes in the composition of the House following the next general elections.
The Speaker said project plans have already been submitted and construction is expected to begin soon. He did not provide a specific timeline for the start of work.
Koon also clarified that the House’s recent decision regarding population benchmarks was only intended to guide the National Elections Commission (NEC) in redrawing electoral districts. He explained that the move does not automatically create new districts, as the proposal must first receive approval from the Senate before it can take effect.
The expansion is expected to support the anticipated increase in legislative representation if the proposed electoral changes are approved.
