Monrovia — The Liberia National Police (LNP) has announced the withdrawal of all charges against Amie T. Dean, following a review of the circumstances surrounding a widely publicized false kidnapping report.

Dean had previously been under investigation and charged for issuing false statements and providing misleading information to law enforcement after claiming she had been abducted, an account later proven to be untrue.

However, in a statement released on April 16, 2026, the LNP said its decision to discontinue the case was based on a broader assessment of the situation, which pointed to underlying psychological distress rather than criminal intent warranting prosecution.

Police authorities acknowledged the seriousness of false reporting, noting that such actions can erode public trust and divert critical security resources. Despite this, the LNP emphasized its commitment to applying a balanced and humane approach in cases involving personal vulnerabilities.

“In the interest of justice and in keeping with principles of proportionality and due process, the decision has been made to withdraw the charges and prioritize appropriate care,” the statement noted.

The LNP has recommended that Dean undergo a comprehensive mental health evaluation, to be conducted with full respect for her rights, dignity, and privacy. Authorities say both government institutions and civil society actors will be engaged to ensure she receives the necessary psychosocial support.

The police also used the occasion to call on women-led organizations, gender advocates, and counseling service providers to step in and assist with her recovery and reintegration, highlighting the importance of community-based support systems.

While urging the public to remain truthful in their engagements with law enforcement, the LNP encouraged individuals facing emotional or psychological challenges to seek help through appropriate health and community channels.

The case, which initially drew public concern after Dean was reported missing earlier this month, has now taken a different turn, shifting focus from criminal accountability to mental health awareness and support.
