Monrovia — The Liberia National Police (LNP) has charged a 26-year-old woman, Amie T. Dean, for allegedly making a false kidnapping report, an act authorities say misled investigators and triggered unnecessary public alarm.
According to the police, Dean, a resident of Paynesville City, has been charged with issuing a false statement and providing a false report to law enforcement officers, in violation of Sections 12.31 and 12.33 of Liberia’s Revised Penal Code. She is currently awaiting trial.
The case stems from an incident reported on April 2, 2026, when Dean was declared missing under circumstances that quickly raised concerns of a possible abduction. Two days later, on April 4, she resurfaced and claimed she had been taken by unknown individuals in an unidentified vehicle.
However, police say subsequent investigations uncovered inconsistencies in her account. During questioning, Dean reportedly admitted that the kidnapping story was untrue and intentionally fabricated. Authorities disclosed that she pleaded for leniency after acknowledging the falsehood.
The LNP has used the incident to caution the public against making false reports, emphasizing that such actions waste valuable security resources and can hinder timely responses to genuine emergencies.
Police say the matter has now been turned over to the court for further legal proceedings.
