Opposition political leader Simeon Freeman of the Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) says his administration would move to ban the substance popularly known in Liberia as “Brown Tap” if he is elected president in 2029.
Freeman said he is concerned about the growing public attention surrounding the product, particularly what he sees as a shift in focus among young Liberians away from issues such as innovation, competitiveness, education, and economic opportunities.
According to the MPC political leader, his government would take strong measures to eradicate the product from the Liberian market.
Freeman made the declaration while commenting on the ongoing public debate surrounding “Brown Tap,” which has attracted widespread discussion over its identity, intended use, and possible health effects.
He vowed that under his presidency, the substance would no longer be readily available in Liberia, using a colorful statement to emphasize the seriousness of his proposed ban.
“Liberians will look for an Atayee shop with a flashlight during the day and still won’t find it,” Freeman said.
His comments come amid increasing public discussions about “Brown Tap,” with calls from different quarters for authorities to determine its contents, safety, and possible effects before deciding on regulatory measures.
