Monrovia, Liberia – Former Lone Star captain Sam Johnson has publicly criticized former Liberian President and football legend George Weah following his recent appearance in the United States to support his son, Timothy Weah, ahead of the announcement of the U.S. Men’s National Team squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

George Weah, Africa’s only Ballon d’Or winner and former Liberian President, is currently in the United States showing support for Timothy Weah, who was recently named among the players selected to represent the United States at football’s biggest tournament.

However, the moment has also sparked criticism from Sam Johnson, who took to Facebook with a strongly worded message directed at the former president.

While acknowledging that any parent would naturally feel proud watching their child reach such a significant milestone, Johnson questioned Weah’s contribution to Liberia’s football development during his presidency.

In his post, Johnson wrote:

“You are so Happy and proud to see your Son going to one of the greatest tournaments, that is Good cus every father or mother will be very happy to see the child or children in this wonderful tournament, we put you there to help push our national team to get to that stage but you was very wicked to the national soccer teams both males and females…”

The former Lone Star striker argued that Weah’s leadership should have delivered stronger progress for both Liberia’s men’s and women’s national football teams.

Johnson further suggested that despite George Weah’s legendary status in world football, his years in political leadership did not produce the level of development many supporters expected for Liberian football, an issue that has remained a long-standing debate among fans and stakeholders.

His comments have since generated reactions online, with some supporters agreeing that Liberia’s national teams struggled during Weah’s presidency, while others defended the former president and pointed to broader challenges affecting sports development in the country.

The exchange adds another layer to the ongoing public discussion surrounding George Weah’s football legacy, both as an international icon and as a former national leader whose tenure continues to attract differing opinions.
