United States international Timothy Weah has been named the new captain of Olympique de Marseille for the 2026/27 season, handing the 26-year-old a major leadership role at one of France’s most historic football clubs.

Weah takes over the captain’s armband from Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who has reportedly been removed from the position by Marseille’s management.

According to the club, the decision followed Højbjerg’s refusal to complete a proposed £15 million transfer to Newcastle United after Marseille and the English club had reportedly reached an agreement on the move.

Marseille subsequently stripped Højbjerg of the captaincy, with Weah selected to take over the leadership role ahead of the new season.

The appointment marks a significant step in Weah’s career. He will now be expected to provide leadership both on and off the pitch as Marseille prepares for the 2026/27 campaign.

Weah’s elevation also adds another notable chapter to a football family legacy closely followed in Liberia and across Africa. He is the son of Liberian football legend and former President George Weah, who remains one of the most celebrated African players in football history.

At 26, Timothy Weah now enters a new stage of his career with greater responsibility at club level. Wearing the captain’s armband for Marseille gives the United States international an opportunity to establish himself not only as a key player but also as a leader at one of European football’s most prominent clubs.

The captaincy will also place greater expectations on Weah as Marseille begins its preparations for the new season.
