Grand Cape Mount County — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has officially kicked off construction of a major road infrastructure project valued at US$363.9 million, marking a significant move toward improving transportation and economic activity across western Liberia.

The project covers a 255-kilometer stretch of road linking key parts of Montserrado, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, and Lofa Counties. Once completed within an estimated five-year period, the highway network will be managed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement that includes long-term tolling, operations, and maintenance.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, President Boakai described the initiative as a critical step in upgrading Liberia’s road network to meet global standards while creating new economic opportunities.

He emphasized that the roads will be constructed with durability and climate resilience in mind, ensuring they remain functional and beneficial for years to come.

The Western Corridor project forms part of a broader national plan to strengthen infrastructure, improve access between regions, and support trade. The scope of work includes several major routes: a 38-kilometer dual carriageway from St. Paul Bridge to Klay, a 79-kilometer single carriageway from Klay to Bo Waterside, 22 kilometers from Klay to Tubmanburg, 30 kilometers from Madina to Robertsport, and an 86-kilometer stretch connecting Voinjama, Kolahun, and Mendikorma.

According to President Boakai, the corridor—along with other planned routes such as the Mano River and Kongo corridors—will play a key role in boosting cross-border trade and positioning Liberia as an important link within the West African region.

He noted that beyond infrastructure, the project carries social and economic significance, as it will reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and improve access for communities that have long struggled with poor road conditions.

The President also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and private investors in making the project possible, noting that the financing model allows for the delivery of high-quality infrastructure without placing the full burden on public funds.

President Boakai further stressed that the initiative will bring relief to rural populations by opening up isolated areas and expanding access to markets, services, and opportunities.

Also speaking at the event, Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio described the project as a major step toward regional integration. He said the corridor will not only connect communities within Liberia but also strengthen ties between neighboring countries by facilitating trade and movement across borders.

The Western Corridor highway is expected to become a vital economic route, supporting increased trade, attracting investment, and enhancing mobility across Liberia’s western region and beyond.
