The United States government has sent a high-level justice delegation to Liberia as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the justice sector. The delegation’s visit, scheduled from September 22-24, 2024, aims to support Liberia in its pursuit of establishing a War and Economic Crimes Court.

A statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia on Monday confirmed the delegation’s arrival, noting that it includes representatives from key U.S. government agencies. These include the Department of State’s Office of Global Criminal Justice, Homeland Security Investigations, the Department of Justice, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The visit underscores the United States’ commitment to helping Liberia address past human rights abuses and economic crimes by building the legal framework needed to hold perpetrators accountable. The delegation is expected to engage in high-level discussions with Liberian government officials, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders to discuss the roadmap toward establishing the much-anticipated court.

The potential creation of a War and Economic Crimes Court has been a topic of discussion in Liberia for several years. The court would focus on prosecuting individuals responsible for war crimes and economic offenses committed during the country’s civil wars and subsequent recovery period. Many Liberians, particularly victims and human rights activists, have been calling for justice and accountability for crimes committed during the country’s turbulent past.

The visit by the U.S. delegation is seen as a significant step in moving Liberia closer to achieving justice and reconciliation.
