Musa Hassan Bility, the embattled Chairman of the opposition Liberty Party (LP), has announced his resignation from the party, ending his three-and-a-half-year tenure. In a heartfelt letter addressed to the party’s National Executive Committee, Hon. Bility listed irreconcilable differences over the direction of the party’s leadership and its reconciliation efforts as key reasons for his resignation; also confirming that he is withdrawing his membership from LP altogether.

Bility, who has been a prominent figure in the broader Liberian politics, expressed both pride and frustration over the recent years of his leadership as chairman. He emphasized the accomplishments of his tenure, including amendments to the LP Constitution that fostered inclusive decision-making and the party’s participation in the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) during the 2023 Presidential and General Elections, where they supported opposition candidate Alexander Benedict Cummings.

However, his resignation comes at a time when the Liberty Party is undergoing a reconciliation process aimed at healing internal conflicts. According to Hon. Bility, some of the patterns being used to achieve unity within the party are in direct conflict with his core beliefs. He stated that he could not, in good conscience, support the new direction being drafted for the party.

“While I firmly believe in democratic systems, I cannot and will not allow my personal beliefs to stand in the way of the reconciliation process,” Bility wrote. He also added that his decision to step down will allow those advocating for the new direction to take the lead and shape the future of the party.

The Liberty Party, founded by the late Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, was the only political party Bility had ever joined since his emergence into Politics. His decision to resign, he said, stems from a belief that his contributions to Liberia’s future will now be better served outside traditional political frameworks. He clarified that he will not be joining any other political party but will continue his political journey through his role as Representative of Nimba County, District 7, and through other political and developmental platforms and reforms.

He thanked the leadership and members of the LP for their support during his tenure, and wished the party well in its future endeavors.
