MONROVIA, Liberia – Former Maryland County District #3 Representative Isaac Roland Blalu is recovering from injuries sustained in a devastating hotel fire in New Delhi, India, which claimed the life of his wife and at least 20 others.
According to information confirmed by the Government of Liberia, Mr. Blalu and his wife were in India seeking medical treatment when the tragedy occurred. The fire broke out at the Flourish Stay B&B in New Delhi on June 3, 2026, resulting in significant casualties.
Authorities reported that 21 people died in the blaze, including 18 foreign nationals who were staying at the facility at the time of the incident.
Mrs. Blalu was among those who lost their lives, while the former lawmaker survived the fire but suffered injuries. He is currently undergoing medical treatment.
The Liberian Government, through the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), confirmed the incident and expressed sympathy to the family during this difficult period.
“The Government of Liberia extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic loss,” the ministry said in its statement.
Mr. Blalu previously served as Representative of Maryland County Electoral District #3 and remains a well-known political figure in the southeastern county.
Details surrounding the cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the casualties are still under investigation by Indian authorities.
The tragic incident has drawn sympathy from Liberians both at home and abroad as the nation mourns the loss of Mrs. Blalu while wishing the former legislator a speedy recovery.
