The Liberia National Police (LNP) has formally charged and forwarded to court 12 individuals allegedly connected to the violent mob incident that occurred last week in the busy commercial district of Red-Light, Paynesville.
The disturbing incident, which triggered widespread public outrage across Liberia and on social media, involved a group of people captured in a viral video assaulting and publicly humiliating a Liberian woman over claims that she was dressed “immodestly.”
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday when the woman was allegedly attacked by a crowd, stripped naked, and subjected to degrading treatment in full public view.
Following days of investigation and public condemnation, police authorities confirmed that the 12 suspects have now been brought before the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice to face legal proceedings in connection with the matter.
The Liberia National Police had earlier condemned the act, describing it as unlawful, degrading, and a violation of the victim’s fundamental human rights and dignity.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement continues efforts to identify and apprehend additional individuals believed to have participated in the incident.
The case has continued to generate serious national debate around mob justice, public vigilantism, gender-based violence, and the protection of human rights in Liberia.
