Monrovia, Liberia — The Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR) has formally petitioned the United Nations, raising alarm over what it describes as serious human rights violations by neighboring Guinea along the Liberia–Guinea border.

According to the Commission, the communication to the UN outlines allegations of cross-border activities by Guinean authorities that are impacting the safety, rights, and livelihoods of Liberian citizens residing in affected communities.

The INCHR, Liberia’s statutory human rights body established in 2005, said the situation has reached a level that warrants urgent international attention and intervention.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, INCHR Chairperson Dempster Brown disclosed that the decision to escalate the matter followed a recent fact-finding mission conducted in border regions. He noted that preliminary findings point to what the Commission believes is territorial encroachment by Guinea.

This is not just a boundary concern; it is a human rights issue that directly affects the dignity and security of our people,” Brown emphasized.

He warned that if left unaddressed, the situation could heighten tensions and expose already vulnerable border communities to further risks, including displacement and potential conflict.

While the Government of Liberia has yet to issue an official response to the Commission’s claims, the development places renewed focus on longstanding border demarcation challenges between the two West African neighbors.

The United Nations is now expected to review the complaint as concerns mount over stability and the protection of civilians in the region.
