The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has sealed a groundbreaking agreement with Starlink Liberia LLC to provide satellite-based internet connectivity to 156 public senior high schools nationwide, a major stride in bridging Liberia’s digital divide.
At the signing ceremony, LTA Chairman Clarence Massaquoi described the initiative as a “great leap forward” in the national effort to enhance digital access and improve learning outcomes for secondary school students. He emphasized that the project aligns with President Joseph N. Boakai’s commitment to advancing Liberia’s digital transformation agenda, particularly by empowering young people through information and communication technology (ICT).
Under the agreement, Starlink will donate internet kits, routers, and a one-year data subscription through its Impact Plan, which supports internet access for schools and healthcare centers in underserved areas.
Valued at over US$160,000, the donation follows discussions between Chairman Massaquoi and Starlink’s management to bolster the LTA’s School Connect Project, a key component of Liberia’s National Digital Transformation Program.
The LTA will work closely with the Ministry of Education to install the Starlink equipment at schools already outfitted with solar power and computers through the Ministry’s Improving Results in Secondary Education (IRISE) project.
According to the LTA, the Starlink kits are expected to arrive in Liberia within the coming weeks for immediate deployment, marking a significant milestone in the country’s journey toward a digitally connected education system.
