In an exciting development for Liberia’s transportation sector, the country is gearing up to launch its first-ever water taxi service later this month. The innovative initiative, spearheaded by former Maryland County Senator Dan Morias, aims to ease traffic congestion in Monrovia while also promoting tourism along the city’s scenic waterways.
The water taxis will operate along a key route from Providence Island to 72nd Boulevard, offering a faster and more efficient alternative for students, government employees, and daily commuters traveling between the suburbs and the city center. With three fully equipped boats, each fitted with modern safety features, the service promises to reduce the stress of road traffic while providing a unique travel experience.
Former Senator Morias confirmed that the boats have already arrived in Liberia and that final preparations are underway in collaboration with the Liberia Maritime Authority and the Ministry of Information’s tourism division.
“This is a milestone for Liberia’s transport sector,” Morias said. “We are working closely with relevant authorities to ensure smooth operations, including designated docking areas and a structured schedule for pick-ups and drop-offs.”
Addressing public concerns, Morias emphasized that passenger safety will be a top priority, with all vessels meeting necessary maritime standards. He also assured that fares will be kept affordable to ensure accessibility for all commuters.

The water taxi project aligns with the government’s ARREST (Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism) agenda, which identifies tourism as a key driver for economic growth. By offering both a practical transport solution and a new way to experience Monrovia’s coastline, the initiative could attract both locals and visitors looking for a different perspective of the city.
As excitement builds ahead of the official launch, many Liberians are eager to see how this new mode of transport will transform daily commutes and open up new possibilities for leisure and tourism.
