The U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, Mark Toner, has issued a stern warning to Liberians considering illegal entry into the United States or participating in visa fraud, emphasizing the severe legal and personal risks involved.
In a recent opinion piece, Ambassador Toner revealed alarming statistics: 20% of Liberians granted U.S. tourist visas do not return home after their visas expire. This trend has placed Liberia among the top 10 countries globally for visa overstays, raising concerns about future visa accessibility for legitimate travelers.
Toner stressed that those caught violating U.S. immigration laws could face imprisonment, deportation, and permanent bans from entering the country. He also warned against individuals who assist in illegal migration, including smugglers and corrupt officials, noting that the U.S. has intensified measures to hold them accountable.
The ambassador highlighted the success of recent U.S. immigration policies, particularly under the Trump administration. In February 2025 alone, illegal border crossings dropped by 94%, while arrests of undocumented immigrants surged by 627%. These figures, Toner said, demonstrate the U.S. government’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws.
Beyond legal consequences, Toner warned of the grave dangers migrants face when taking irregular routes. Many fall prey to human traffickers, violent criminals, and extortion schemes, with some losing their lives in the process.
“The journey is perilous, and the risks far outweigh any perceived benefits,” he said.
The ambassador urged Liberians to respect U.S. immigration laws and reconsider any plans to overstay visas or enter illegally. He also advised those with relatives or friends living unlawfully in the U.S. to encourage them to return home voluntarily before facing deportation.
