The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) is stepping up security efforts in Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Gbarpolu Counties with the launch of Operation True Guardian, a large-scale operation aimed at addressing rising illegal activities in the region.
According to Deputy Chief of Public Affairs El-Dorado Nyanti Jebbe, the military has observed a worrying increase in cross-border crimes, including the smuggling of arms, drugs, and human trafficking. These activities, he noted, have been made easier by Liberia’s porous borders and limited enforcement capabilities, posing a growing threat to national security.
Residents in border communities have reportedly raised concerns over the impact of these illicit activities, which not only put their safety at risk but also contribute to a sense of instability in the region. While details of the AFL’s strategy remain undisclosed, the operation is expected to intensify monitoring, enforcement, and security presence in affected areas.
With the operation set to begin at the end of March 2025, all eyes will be on how effectively the military can curb these challenges while ensuring the safety of civilians in the process.
