The Nimba County Administration has officially responded to a financial communication from Nimba University, acknowledging a tuition and fees bill totaling US$12,732.94 for 183 students sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
In a letter dated May 20, 2025, County Superintendent Kou Gono addressed the university’s president, Dr. Jesse Noah Mongrue, thanking the institution for its continued engagement with the county and its educational priorities. The bill, submitted by the university, outlines unpaid tuition for USAID-sponsored students whose educational support had not been factored into the county’s already-expired Fiscal Year 2024/25 budget.
Superintendent Gono clarified that the students’ sponsorship obligations had surfaced after the county’s budgetary cycle had closed, and as such, the administration had no prior allocation for the tuition fees.
Despite the timing challenge, Superintendent Gono gave assurances that the county remains committed to honoring the university’s claim. She stated that the full amount will be captured in the upcoming 2025/26 County Budget and will be paid in full upon approval of the new fiscal plan.

The communication reflects a growing effort between local government and higher education institutions to address funding gaps and promote educational access for underprivileged or donor-sponsored students in Liberia.
Nimba University, one of the country’s fast-growing public institutions, continues to serve hundreds of students across the county and beyond.
