President Joseph Boakai in an impassioned speech at the 2024 World Food Forum in Rome, urged the global community to take immediate and decisive steps to address the escalating food insecurity crisis, with a particular focus on Africa. His message was clear: the world can no longer afford to merely discuss solutions—it’s time to act.

President Boakai, speaking before a distinguished audience of heads of state, development leaders, and representatives from international organizations, painted a sobering picture of the current state of global hunger. “Hunger and malnutrition are on the rise, and it’s not just an African problem—it’s a global crisis,” he emphasized. “We cannot wait for tomorrow; we must act today.”

He pointed out that while meetings and forums like the World Food Forum are essential for sharing ideas, they should lead to concrete actions that result in change. For too long, these crises have been discussed without meaningful follow-up, and it’s the most vulnerable populations, particularly in Africa, who continue to suffer.

Boakai didn’t just highlight the problem; he also shared his vision for the future. He outlined Liberia’s ambitious plan to transform its agricultural sector, positioning the country as a leading force in the global fight against hunger. Through a focus on sustainable farming practices, increased investment in rural development, and empowering small-scale farmers, Boakai is confident Liberia can contribute to a solution that not only benefits its citizens but also has ripple effects across the region.

“Ending hunger is not just a moral obligation; it’s a necessity for global peace and security. Food is a basic right,” Boakai said, calling on world leaders to support initiatives that will strengthen agricultural productivity and resilience in vulnerable countries.

As the world grapples with the growing threat of food insecurity, President Boakai’s call to action serves as a reminder that the time for swift, decisive leadership is now. The global community has the tools and resources—what’s needed is the will to turn those into meaningful progress.
