Yesterday, Ambassador Michael McCarthy joined Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism (MICAT) Ledgerhood Rennie, National Traditional Council Chief Zanzan Karwor, and Deputy Minister for Legal Affairs Deweh Gray at Providence Island to announce a U.S.-Liberian collaborative initiative on preservation of the historic venue and development of recommendations for its reuse.

The Government of Liberia and the Government of the United States signed a joint statement to announce their support for the plan to preserve and reuse Providence Island. In addition, MICAT, the Ministry of Justice, and the World Monuments Fund signed a memorandum of understanding, which states their mutual desire to develop and reinforce their cooperation in conserving the cultural landscape of Providence Island.

Hon. Princess Turkolon also wrote via her fb handle thanking the government and it’s partners for such great initiative: “would like to appreciate the American Ambassador, Michael McCarthy and his crew at the US Embassy accredited near Monrovia for ensuring that this historic milestone is realized.
I also like to thank the World Monument Fund (WMF) organization for accepting to fund Providence Island redevelopment into a tourism & cultural preservation site.

Thanks to our traditional people headed by Chief Zanzan Karwor, the University of Virginia USA and the university of Liberia, the crusader for peace (my own seh mother Juli Endee), to the Lord Mayor Jefferson T. Koijee and other officials of government, our MICAT\’s family headed by Hon. Ledgerhood Julius Rennie , the Justice Ministry, and to my dynamic former boss Hon. Eugene Lenn Nagbe who started all this, I say a BIG, BIG KUDOS to you all for job well done.

This could not have been made possible without the unwaivering patriotic sense of His Excellency President George Manneh Weah for affording me the utmost opportunity to serve my beloved country. Thank you so much Mr. President for your uncompromising directive in making sure our Tourism sector thrive.

Remember, the Pro-poor Agenda for Development and Prosperity is indeed strong and alive. No turning back!”
