Monrovia, Liberia — The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has introduced a new price ceiling for the sale of cooking gas, setting firm limits on how much consumers should pay to refill a 12kg cylinder across the Liberian market.

The directive, which took effect on April 22, 2026, is part of the government’s ongoing effort to stabilize commodity prices and curb arbitrary increases by dealers amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living.

According to the Ministry, the wholesale price for refilling a 12kg gas cylinder has been fixed at US$26.00, while the retail price is capped at US$28.00, equivalent to approximately LD$5,180. The pricing structure is based on the Central Bank of Liberia’s exchange rate of LD$185 to US$1, as recorded on April 13, 2026.

In announcing the measure, authorities emphasized that the decision is aimed at ensuring fairness and uniformity in the pricing of cooking gas, a key household commodity relied upon by many Liberians.

The Ministry further disclosed that its Inspectorate Team will actively monitor the market to ensure full compliance. Dealers will be required to present invoices and other relevant documentation for verification, as part of efforts to prevent price manipulation and protect consumers.

Officials have warned that any business found violating the approved pricing structure or engaging in unjustified price hikes will face regulatory action in line with existing laws.

The move comes at a time when Liberia continues to grapple with fluctuations in fuel-related costs, driven in part by global oil price trends and exchange rate pressures. Authorities say the enforcement of a price ceiling is necessary to shield consumers from excessive pricing while maintaining order within the market.

As enforcement begins, attention now turns to how effectively the new policy will be implemented and whether it will bring sustained relief to households already navigating economic challenges.
