Monrovia, Liberia — The Supreme Court of Liberia has issued an immediate prohibition on all activities of the Global Methodist Church within the Gompa District area, dealing a significant blow to the newly formed denomination’s operations in northern Liberia.
The order was handed down on February 23, 2026, by Justice Yussif D. Kaba, sitting in chambers. The ruling restrains the Global Methodist Church from conducting any religious, administrative, or institutional activities in the district pending further legal proceedings.
According to the Court, the prohibition upholds the claim of the United Methodist Church, Gompa District, which asserts lawful ownership over all properties currently being occupied or used by the Global Methodist Church in the area.
As part of the decision, Justice Kaba has summoned the Global Methodist Church to appear before the Supreme Court for a conference scheduled for March 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Until that time, the Court has ordered the denomination to refrain from accessing or utilizing all disputed properties.
The properties affected by the ruling include the Ganta Methodist School, hospital facilities, midwifery training center, gymnasium, administrative offices, and the entire surrounding compound. The Court has further granted the United Methodist Church full legal authority to take possession and control of these facilities while the matter remains under judicial review.
The Supreme Court’s action comes at a critical moment for the Global Methodist Church, whose members have reportedly been converging on Gompa City from various parts of the country for what was intended to be the church’s first annual conference since its establishment in February 2025 in Gbarnga.
Legal observers say the ruling represents a major setback for the emerging denomination and underscores the intensifying property and legitimacy disputes between the two Methodist bodies in Liberia. The outcome of the March 3 conference is expected to shape the future presence and operations of the Global Methodist Church in the Gompa District and beyond.
