ZORZOR, LOFA COUNTY – An ongoing religious crisis in Kailemai Town, Zorzor District, has intensified after two Christian pastors were detained by members of a traditional community on November 14, 2025, and remain in custody despite mediation attempts.
According to Pastor James Koboi, head of the Council of Churches in Lofa, the confrontation began when the pastors and their congregants went to harvest their rice farm. They were reportedly ambushed in broad daylight by individuals linked to the local traditional society. Three people were taken into the nearby sacred grove, commonly referred to as the “devil bush.” One person was later freed, but the two pastors are still being held.
The incident has sparked strong reactions across the Christian community in Lofa. Pastor Koboi condemned the act as “unacceptable,” calling on local and national authorities to intervene without delay. He warned that Christians are growing increasingly frustrated, with some discussing plans to mobilize, peacefully or otherwise, to retrieve their detained church leaders.
A major solidarity gathering is expected to take place in Zorzor City, where Christians and concerned citizens will demand the immediate release of the pastors.
This is a developing story. Further details will follow as new information emerges.
