The Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has described the recent fire outbreak at the residence of former President George Manneh Weah as a premeditated attack on his life, calling for a forensic, international, and independent investigation into the incident.
In a strongly worded statement issued by its National Chairman, Atty. Janga A. Kowo, the CDC warned that the fire was not an isolated occurrence but part of a pattern of threats and intimidation against its political leader and supporters.
The party recalled previous confrontations at Roberts International Airport (RIA), where members alleged that personnel of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) attacked CDC partisans during Weah’s return to the country. On another occasion, the party said its supporters were “brutally manhandled, handcuffed, and in some cases jailed” by armed police officers.
The CDC also condemned what it termed “a campaign of disinformation and misinformation” allegedly orchestrated by Unity Party supporters. This, the party said, included the circulation of a fake AI-generated image purporting to show the bedroom of the former president.
While assuring the public that Mr. Weah is safe and in good health, the CDC stressed that only an independent probe can ensure accountability and prevent the manipulation of facts surrounding the fire.
“The CDC remains committed to safeguarding the peace, unity, and democracy of Liberia,” the statement read, urging all political actors to respect the sanctity of human life and the principles of democracy.
