President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has nominated former Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) Chairman George G. Solo as Liberia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Italy, pending Senate confirmation.
A communication from the Italian government confirms Mr. Solo’s nomination. The appointment, dated August 11, 2025, was addressed to Vice President and Senate President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, requesting the Senate to expedite the confirmation process to ensure a smooth diplomatic transition.
Mr. Solo, who has in recent years been vocal in his political stance, has consistently praised President Boakai for what he describes as “visionary and dynamic leadership,” while openly criticizing former President George Weah for what he called “failed leadership.”

In the formal nomination letter, President Boakai wrote:
“I am pleased to submit herewith the following nomination, pending Senate confirmation, where applicable, for appointment in government:
Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Mr. George G. Solo, Ambassador Designate.
I would greatly appreciate if this is given expedited confirmation by the Senate so as to ensure smooth transition in the government.”
Mr. Solo previously served as Chairman of the CDC before parting ways with the party and later aligning with political figures outside the Weah-led administration. His nomination to one of Liberia’s key diplomatic posts marks a significant step in the Boakai government’s foreign policy direction.
The Senate is expected to begin its confirmation proceedings in the coming days.
