Former President George Manneh Weah has extended a heartfelt message of congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, the newly elected leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
In a formal statement issued Thursday, the former Liberian leader described Pope Leo XIV’s election as a “divine” moment for the Catholic Church and humanity at large. Pope Leo XIV, who made history as the first citizen of the United States to ascend to the papacy, was chosen following the death of Pope Francis in April.
“I wish to congratulate His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his divine election as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church,” Weah wrote. “The first citizen of the United States to hold this sacred office, Pope Leo XIV has exemplified unwavering service and dedication to the Church and humanity at large, qualities that render him deserving of this profound responsibility.”

The former President went on to commend the peaceful transition and expressed hope for continued spiritual leadership under Pope Leo XIV’s stewardship.
“On this occasion, marking yet another historic transition for the Church, I extend my best wishes to Catholics in Liberia, across the globe, and to the broader Christian community,” Weah stated.
He concluded by expressing optimism for the future of the Church, emphasizing the role of the papacy in promoting peace and compassion.
“It is my sincere hope that the new Pontiff will continue to strengthen the bonds of Christianity, champion compassion and justice, and tirelessly advocate for global peace,” he said. “May God Almighty continue to bestow his bountiful blessings upon us all.”
The Catholic community in Liberia, which makes up a significant portion of the country’s religious population, is expected to join the global Church in prayer and celebration as Pope Leo XIV begins his papal duties.
