The Liberia Football Association (LFA) has taken a major step toward boosting grassroots football with the launch of a new mini-pitch at the Edward Beyan Kesselly (EBK) Military Barracks. The facility, part of FIFA’s Arena Project, aims to provide a safe and modern space for young athletes to develop their skills and passion for the game.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Thursday, April 17, was attended by LFA officials, military leaders, and excited community members. The 20×40-meter pitch, designed for 7-a-side matches, will serve students from the Linda Thomas-Greenfield Preparatory School, which educates over 400 children from the barracks and nearby areas, as well as aspiring footballers in the community.
LFA President Mustapha I. Raji praised the collaboration with the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) and thanked Chief of Staff Brigadier General Davidson F. Forleh for backing the initiative.
“Today marks the beginning of a new pitch for youths and adults, a 7-a-side facility that represents the first step in development,” Raji said. “We will expand from here by adding lighting and, eventually, moving toward a full-size pitch.”
He also highlighted the AFL’s longstanding support for Liberian football, including providing the Blue Field in PHP Community and assigning AFL officer Joseph Tweh as the LFA’s Deputy Safety and Security Officer.
Brigadier General Forleh reaffirmed the AFL’s commitment to the project, pledging full support during construction and beyond. He emphasized the pitch’s potential to nurture talent and foster community spirit.
“This facility will not only develop football skills but also promote discipline, teamwork, and healthy living among our youth,” Forleh said. “The AFL is proud to partner with the LFA in creating opportunities for the next generation.”
The EBK Barracks mini-pitch is part of FIFA’s global Arena Project, which focuses on expanding access to quality football infrastructure in underserved areas. Liberia’s inclusion in the initiative signals growing international support for the country’s football development.
Local coaches and young players at the ceremony expressed excitement about the project, hopeful that it will unearth new talent and provide a structured pathway for aspiring professionals.
With construction underway, the LFA and AFL are optimistic that the mini-pitch will become a hub for football development, offering a platform for young boys and girls to chase their dreams. As Liberia continues to invest in grassroots sports, projects like this could be the foundation for future stars.
