Liberian superstar Korte Bazzie alias Kobazzie was today featured on BBC “This is Africa” by Dj Edu. The Liberian singer was asked several questions about the current state of the country, his political stance, the musical industry and his career which he elaborated on quite well.
He was first asked about how the war has affected and he gave a flashback on his own experiences including some unnecessary reasons why the war started. “The war we were fighting was senseless, they were not fighting the enemy. They were fighting and destroying properties that would help us. That’s not war! We are trying to develop as a country but we have a long way to go” Kobazzie said.
He then began to give a lil history about Liberian music. Beginning with; after the war when some guys started the Hipco Rap Music and later on came the Afropop which was also being done in our local pidgin ‘Koloqua’. And also said that for the past three years now, at least people have started appreciating Liberian music and gradually it’s picking up.
They got a bit personal about his career when Dj Edu asked him about how he started music? Kobazzie explained about how he started from vibing in his crib at the time he was in still in school. And when he graduated, his older brother seeing his efforts and passion for music decided to sponsor him for his first studio section and the outcome of it “Sleep For What” which was his first single became a hit in 2016.
When asked about being popular and the disadvantages, Kobazzie disclosed that he love people to be around him. That’s why he doesn’t move around with security. He’s easy to meet, sit and eat with. And he actually enjoys being famous but it also comes with some disadvantages on the other hand. Because I’m Liberia, when people know you’re famous they expect wealth to come with it but it is quite different here. “And it is sad and embarrassing when people run to you for help out but you can’t help them” he said.
About his political stand point, Kobazzie said he’s quite a lover of politics and is infact a part time politician as he has been instrumental in helping some top politicians get to power. But yet still, he’s very careful of who he supports or ask his fans and followers to support.
He also lamented that his long term goals are to have a charity, help more people on the streets and infact serve his people in government if they call for it.
