Buchanan, Liberia – A fatal workplace accident at the ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) port in Buchanan has claimed the life of a Liberian worker, raising fresh concerns about safety conditions at the industrial facility.
The victim, identified as Gibson Karteh, died on April 10, 2026, following a crane malfunction during routine cargo operations. According to an official statement from AML, the incident involved a vessel-mounted crane whose cables unexpectedly recoiled toward the operator’s cabin.
Karteh, who was operating the crane at the time, was struck by the recoiling cables and sustained critical injuries. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the scene and administered urgent medical assistance, but he was later pronounced dead.
ArcelorMittal Liberia confirmed that the deceased was a third-party contractor and expressed condolences to his family. “Our thoughts are with the operator’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” the company said.
In response to the incident, AML has halted operations in the affected area, securing the site as authorities and company officials launch a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the malfunction.
The tragedy has reignited longstanding concerns among workers regarding safety protocols and working conditions at the port. Employees have, on several occasions, raised alarms about potential hazards and called for stricter enforcement of safety measures to prevent such incidents.
As investigations continue, many are now watching closely to see whether the findings will lead to improved safety standards and accountability within one of Liberia’s largest industrial operations.
