MONROVIA – Liberian journalist and broadcaster Varflay Kamara has announced his resignation from the Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS), bringing to a close nearly nine years of service at the country’s state broadcaster.

Kamara disclosed his decision in a public statement, reflecting on what he described as an “incredible journey” that began in the newsroom and eventually led him to senior leadership roles within the institution.

According to Kamara, he joined LBS on May 8, 2017 as a reporter and newscaster. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, serving in several key positions including host of the widely followed Super Morning Show, Director of Public Affairs, and later Director of News.

During his time with the institution, Kamara said his work focused heavily on accountability journalism, reporting on major national issues while covering both the Legislature and the Executive Mansion.

LBS shaped me into the professional I am today,” Kamara noted in his statement. “During my time there, I reported stories that made meaningful impact on our country. My reporting held the same governments, past and present, that paid me accountable. For that, I’m proud.”

He emphasized that his years on radio were dedicated to strengthening democratic accountability in Liberia, noting that his interviews often involved some of the country’s most influential and challenging public figures.

Kamara also acknowledged the professional growth he experienced through those engagements, describing them as moments that strengthened both his confidence and conviction as a journalist.

Reflecting on his departure, Kamara admitted that leaving the institution was an emotional decision, given the deep connection he developed with the organization over the years.

While it is emotional to leave an institution I deeply love and care about, I am proud to have concluded my service in the same newsroom I stepped into on May 8, 2017 as a reporter and newscaster,” he said.

He expressed appreciation to the four management teams under whom he served, crediting them for providing opportunities and challenges that helped shape his career. Kamara also paid tribute to the newsroom staff, particularly younger colleagues, for what he described as their cooperation, respect, and unwavering support throughout his tenure.

In his message to the staff, he encouraged them to sustain and build upon the reforms implemented during his time in leadership.

Kamara also used the opportunity to thank the station’s loyal audience and urged listeners to continue supporting ELBC, which he described as “the standard for professional broadcasting in Liberia.”

Despite stepping away from the broadcaster, Kamara reaffirmed his commitment to contributing meaningfully to Liberia’s national development.

He also expressed gratitude to his family, especially his mother, for their continued prayers and support throughout his career.

Kamara concluded his message on a hopeful note, suggesting that his departure may not necessarily be permanent.

I may return to LBS someday,” he said, before ending his statement with a blessing for the country.

His resignation marks the end of a notable chapter at Liberia’s state broadcaster, where he built a reputation as a reporter, interviewer, and newsroom leader.
