Authorities in Margibi County have confiscated more than 1,000 gallons of gasoline from local sellers following a major enforcement operation targeting illegal fuel price increases.

The inspection exercise was led by Margibi County Superintendent O Jay Godfavor Morris Jr., in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and officers of the Liberia National Police assigned to the Margibi Detachment.

The operation, carried out on Monday, March 16, 2026, focused on monitoring gasoline prices in the cities of Kakata and Weala. Authorities said the move was prompted by mounting complaints from commuters and motorists who reported sharp increases in the price of gasoline.

According to officials, the Government of Liberia has set the approved pump price of gasoline at LD$910 per gallon. However, during the inspection tour, authorities discovered that several gasoline sellers were charging above the government-mandated rate.

Officials say the practice has placed additional financial pressure on residents, particularly drivers and passengers who depend on fuel for transportation.

Following the discovery, authorities confiscated more than 1,000 gallons of gasoline from vendors found violating the pricing regulation. The seized fuel has since been transported to the Margibi Superintendent’s Compound in Kakata.

Authorities indicated that the gasoline will remain in custody until a meeting is held with the sellers to ensure that the product is later sold to the public at the official government-approved price.

Speaking during the enforcement exercise, Superintendent Morris issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the illegal price increases, stressing that the county administration will not tolerate actions that exploit citizens.

He noted that the unauthorized inflation of gasoline prices has created serious challenges for commuters and motorists across the county.

“We will not allow individuals to exploit citizens during this time,” Morris cautioned. “Anyone found violating the government’s price regulation will face the full weight of the law.”

The Margibi County Administration has meanwhile called on gasoline sellers to immediately comply with the approved pricing structure and refrain from charging customers beyond the official rate.
