Monrovia — The Liberia Airport Authority has announced a sweeping modernization drive aimed at repositioning the Roberts International Airport as a competitive aviation hub within West Africa.

Addressing journalists at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing, LAA Managing Director Ernest R. Hughes outlined a reform framework anchored on three core priorities: safety, security, and improved customer service.

Hughes disclosed that the authority has rolled out a comprehensive safety policy as part of its bid to secure international certification by 2026 under standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization. Achieving that milestone would mark the first time a Liberian airport attains such global recognition.

Beyond certification, the modernization blueprint includes upgrading the airport’s fire and rescue unit to meet Category 10 standards,

a level required to handle larger commercial aircraft. Authorities also plan to strengthen power reliability through the introduction of solar energy systems, overhaul existing security infrastructure, and implement measures designed to significantly enhance passenger comfort and overall travel experience.

Officials say the transformation agenda is intended to restore investor confidence, attract additional international carriers, and strategically position Liberia as a key aviation gateway serving West Africa and broader international markets.
