Police in Nimba County have taken into custody a 20-year-old man accused of carrying out violent attacks against commercial motorcyclists in and around Ganta City.
Confirming the arrest during a February 3, 2026 appearance on Voice of Gompa radio in Ganta, Nimba County Police Commander and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mendin Larmie, said the suspect, identified as Lee Meayean, was apprehended on January 26, 2026, in the City View Community while allegedly attempting to launch another robbery.
According to ACP Larmie, the most recent incident involved a commercial rider, Blessing Dolo, who was attacked at about 11:00 p.m. after transporting the suspect. Police said Meayean first asked to be taken to the Ganta General Market, then redirected the rider to City View Community, claiming he needed to pick up a bag of cassava. The agreed fare for the trip was L$200.
Investigators disclosed that upon reaching an area close to the Ganta checkpoint, the suspect asked the rider to stop. At that point, he reportedly retrieved a cutlass hidden in nearby bushes and struck Dolo on the head. The victim’s cries for help alerted security personnel stationed at the checkpoint, who immediately intervened and arrested the suspect.
Police said Meayean was found with a cutlass at the time of arrest and was later transferred to Sanniquellie for further investigation. During questioning, he reportedly admitted to the attack. Authorities have since charged him with Aggravated Assault and Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder, and the case has been forwarded to court. Meanwhile, the injured motorcyclist is undergoing treatment at a health facility in Nimba County.
ACP Larmie further revealed that the suspect also confessed to a previous attack carried out on December 16, 2025, at the same location. In that incident, another commercial rider, Forkey Gonyun, was allegedly assaulted and robbed of his motorcycle. Gonyun is currently receiving medical care at the Ganta Methodist Hospital, while police continue efforts to recover the stolen motorcycle.
The Liberia National Police say Meayean is believed to be among those behind a string of violent attacks on motorcyclists in the county. Authorities have reassured residents that security operations will remain intensified to curb criminal activities and protect public safety across Nimba County.
