The Chief Executive Officer of Lap Sportswear, Augustus Gwan, has officially unveiled the Nimba Football Academy in Sanniquellie, marking a major step forward for grassroots sports development in Nimba County.
The newly established academy is designed to nurture young and aspiring footballers across the county, offering structured training, mentorship, and development opportunities. Once fully operational, the institution is expected to stand as the first dedicated football academy in Nimba County, giving children with a passion for the game a clear and organized pathway to grow their talents.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Amb. Gwan expressed gratitude to community members, partners, and supporters who turned out to witness the historic moment. He described the academy as the fulfillment of a long-standing vision, brought to life through collective commitment and a shared belief in empowering young people through sports.
According to him, the academy’s core objective is to create opportunities that allow young athletes to sharpen their skills and gain exposure to broader football prospects. He noted that while not every player may reach the professional stage, sports still offer multiple avenues for meaningful contribution to national development. He encouraged aspiring players to stay disciplined, focused, and passionate in their pursuit of success.
Ambassador Gwan disclosed that the academy will be developed gradually, starting with the selection of at least 14 players in its initial phase. Player recruitment, he explained, will be based on assessments conducted by the technical team, including the head coach and other officials responsible for training and player growth.
He further emphasized that the academy’s reach will extend beyond Sanniquellie to other parts of Nimba County, ensuring that hidden talents across the region are identified and nurtured. He urged young people to seize the opportunity, stressing that dedication and hard work could one day open doors to clubs in Europe, the United States, and other parts of the world.
The academy’s CEO also acknowledged the critical role of parents, thanking them for their continued encouragement and support. He stressed that the initiative is designed not only for individual success but also for the long-term benefit of families, communities, and the county at large.
Unveiled during the ceremony was the Nimba Football Academy logo, which incorporates elements reflecting the county’s identity and natural landscape. The emblem, according to Amb. Gwan, represents unity, growth, and ambition. He called on parents, community leaders, and stakeholders to work collectively to sustain and strengthen the academy.
The launch of the Nimba Football Academy stands as a landmark achievement for sports development in the county and signals renewed hope that a new generation of footballers will emerge, contributing positively to the growth of sports in Liberia.
