A peaceful gathering marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities took a chaotic turn on Wednesday evening after police fired teargas to disperse a group of frustrated attendees who protested over the failure to receive promised transportation support.
The incident occurred at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town shortly after the official program concluded. According to several protesters, organizers had assured them that transportation fare would be provided to help them return home. But when the event ended, no such support was made available.
Feeling abandoned and ignored, the group began to demand answers. As tensions rose, some of the protesters blocked the entrance of the complex, insisting that authorities address the situation.
Police officers later moved in to clear the area, leading to a confrontation. Officers fired teargas, sending onlookers and motorists scrambling as traffic rapidly built up in the vicinity.
In response, some of the aggrieved protesters hurled stones, escalating the scene into a brief but chaotic standoff.
No immediate report of injuries or arrests has been released, and authorities have yet to provide an official statement regarding the incident or the alleged broken promise of transportation support.
