Former Miss Liberia and humanitarian advocate Wokie Dolo has made a passionate appeal for Liberia to take decisive action against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and early childhood marriage, calling on national leaders to prioritize the protection and empowerment of women and girls.
“Every harmful practice that violates the rights and dignity of women and girls is a setback to our nation’s progress,” Dolo declared. “It’s time to move beyond awareness and take bold legislative steps that protect, empower, and uphold justice.”
According to Dolo, such practices not only endanger the health and well-being of young girls but also hinder Liberia’s social and economic growth. She emphasized that ending these harmful traditions requires collective action, urging lawmakers, community leaders, and citizens to push for stronger laws and stricter enforcement to permanently eradicate gender-based violence and inequality.
“We have endured too many setbacks because of these unnecessary practices,” she added. “Ending them is not just a moral duty, it’s a legislative imperative. Effective laws protect lives and promote equality.”
Dolo’s call comes at a critical time, as national conversations continue over women’s rights, traditional customs, and the need for meaningful legal reforms to safeguard Liberia’s young girls and ensure their full participation in the nation’s future.
