Authorities in Grand Gedeh County are investigating the disappearance of a six-day-old newborn from the Martha Tubman Memorial Hospital under circumstances hospital staff described as “the work of the devil.”
Hospital Administrator Thomas Q. Neewary confirmed that the baby was discovered missing around 2:45 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2025. He said the hospital immediately alerted the police, who began a formal investigation.
The mother, Tracy Nuch, explained that her child had been admitted to the Critical Pediatric Unit shortly after birth due to medical complications but had been improving steadily. Nurses told her the newborn might be discharged soon but later said the baby needed more observation because of changes in skin tone. She said she visited the ward multiple times and even breastfed her child shortly before stepping away to rest. When she returned around 3:00 a.m., the baby was gone.
Ministry of Health Issues Formal Statement
In a separate statement, the Ministry of Health confirmed that at approximately 2:00 a.m. on November 16, 2025, an unidentified individual, described as wearing a hijab, unlawfully entered the Infant Ward and reportedly made away with a newborn male baby.
The Ministry said the matter has been reported to the Liberia National Police, and an active investigation is ongoing. Officials expressed deep concern and affirmed their cooperation with law enforcement to ensure the safe recovery of the infant and the arrest of the perpetrator.
The Ministry also appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone who:
Observed someone carrying or moving with a newborn under suspicious circumstances Has information on the suspect or the child’s whereabouts Noticed unusual movements around the hospital during the time of the incident to immediately contact the Liberia National Police, the Ministry of Health, or the nearest authority.
The Ministry emphasized that timely information from the public could be crucial to resolving the case. Police and hospital authorities continue to work closely as the investigation unfolds.
