Returning from a high-profile trip to the United States, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai called on Liberians to lessen their dependence on money sent by relatives abroad and instead focus on building sustainable livelihoods at home.
Speaking at an intercessory service on Tuesday, President Boakai highlighted the sacrifices many Liberians abroad make to support families back home. “A lot of you here are depending on small, small money that people send. Sometimes when they send you US$50, that person does not have money, but you can say, ‘that’s only US$50 you sent me,’” he noted.
The President stressed that Liberia is rich in resources and opportunities that, if properly managed, could provide citizens with better lives than reliance on foreign support. “I wish you would go there and see the condition in which that person earned the US$50. You have not gone there to see it. That is why it’s good to build your country. Liberia is a beautiful country where you have everything. The only thing is to manage it,” he said.
Boakai concluded by encouraging Liberians to remain in the country and contribute to its prosperity, rather than seeking opportunities solely through migration.
The President’s return followed engagements at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Diaspora Investment Forum, a Town Hall Meeting, and several bilateral talks aimed at strengthening Liberia’s diplomatic and economic ties.
A large crowd welcomed Boakai at Roberts International Airport, waving Liberian flags and wearing Unity Party-themed shirts. However, speculation emerged that some attendees had been paid to join the reception.
Supporters, including members of “Descendants of the Unity Party,” dismissed the claims. “If people have been paid, I don’t know, but I spent my own money to come here,” said Lassana Kamara, a group member. “We are not here because of money. We are here because of Liberia. What the President is doing, we are very happy.”
President Boakai’s return marks the end of a mission where he highlighted Liberia’s priorities on the international stage and sought global support. Supporters say his leadership is paving the way for a renewed path of progress in the country.
