Paynesville City Mayor Robert S. Bestman II has officially announced Paynesville Football Club as the “Official Football Team of the City of Paynesville,” a move city leaders are describing as a historic milestone.
The declaration was made during a meeting with Paynesville FC President Hilary Sackie. Mayor Bestman highlighted the unifying role of sports, stressing that the club represents more than football, it reflects the determination, resilience, and community spirit of Paynesville.
“Today, we celebrate not just a football club, but a symbol of unity, hard work, and dedication that embodies the spirit of Paynesville,” the mayor stated, encouraging residents to rally behind their team.
Club President Hilary Sackie welcomed the recognition, noting that the honor strengthens their resolve to inspire the city’s youth.
“This motivates us to strive harder, build stronger community ties, and bring pride to Paynesville through football,” Sackie said.
The recognition marks a significant milestone in the club’s journey. Founded in 2008 as Reeves FC, Paynesville FC has steadily risen from a community-based outfit to a powerhouse in Liberian football. The club gained promotion from the third division in 2016, secured the 2023-24 Orange Knockout Cup, and is now representing Liberia on the continental stage through the CAF Inter-Club tournament.
Mayor Bestman described the designation as a call for citizens to support their team in the national league, drawing parallels with cities around the world that rally behind their football clubs.
“Just like cities across the globe stand with their teams, Paynesville must stand with Paynesville FC,” he urged.
For many, this moment goes beyond sports. It signals Paynesville’s broader vision to position itself as a hub for sports development, youth empowerment, and civic pride.
