The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) on Friday, October 17, 2025, held its first official retirement ceremony in post-war Liberia, honoring six senior personnel for their years of dedicated service. The event, held at the Barclay Training Center (BTC), marks a historic step in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to modernize and professionalize its military.

Those honored at the ceremony include Captain James S. Gbakoyah, Warrant Officer 2 Girley Merchant, Master Sergeant Richard Pah, the late Master Sergeant Jallah J. Sandy, First Sergeant Henry K. Bah, and First Sergeant Robert K. Toe.

According to reports, the retired officers received compensation packages of $40,000 USD and $30,000 USD, respectively, in recognition of their long and faithful service to the nation.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah described the ceremony as a “return of dignity to the Force,” symbolizing renewed pride, discipline, and trust within the Armed Forces of Liberia. He emphasized that the occasion demonstrates the AFL’s strengthened institutional integrity and its growing culture of professionalism.

This milestone retirement event serves as both a tribute to the sacrifices of Liberia’s military personnel and a reflection of the government’s commitment to honoring those who have served the country with loyalty and distinction.
