A controversial proposal before the House of Representatives seeks to allocate over US$1.09 million for the purchase of vehicles for all 73 Chiefs of Office Staff serving lawmakers of the 55th Legislature.
The plan, introduced during the House’s Tuesday sitting, October 14, 2025, suggests that each Chief of Office Staff receive a vehicle valued at US$15,000. The proposal, authored by Representatives Michael Thomas, Prince A. Toles, Prescilla A. Cooper, and Alex J. Grant, has now been forwarded to the Committee on Ways, Means, and Finance for detailed scrutiny in collaboration with the House Leadership.
According to the lawmakers, many Chiefs of Office Staff struggle with serious transportation challenges that hinder them from carrying out official responsibilities effectively. They described these staffers as vital administrative deputies to Representatives, responsible for managing daily legislative duties, coordinating office activities, and representing lawmakers at functions.
The communication noted that reliance on public transport often causes delays, disrupting smooth coordination between lawmakers and their offices. It therefore urged the Legislature to provide vehicles to enhance efficiency and performance.
However, the proposal has sparked a wave of public criticism. Many Liberians have condemned the initiative, branding it insensitive, selfish, and wasteful, especially at a time when ordinary citizens continue to grapple with harsh economic realities.
Despite the backlash, the House Plenary has instructed the relevant committee to investigate the financial and practical feasibility of the plan and report back with recommendations.
If approved, the vehicle purchase would mark one of the latest in a series of legislative spending proposals that have drawn scrutiny over government priorities and accountability.
