Amos T. Gbawon, 52, head of the Nimba County branch of the Group of 77 Disabled Persons Organization, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a 1-year-11-month-old baby girl.
Judge Musa S. Sidibey of the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court in Sanniquellie, a court specially designated to handle sexual offense cases, handed down the sentence. According to the ruling, the abuse occurred within the Nimba County Disabled Community facility, a residential center for disabled persons. Both Gbawon and the victim lived on the premises in separate apartments.
Gbawon, who also served as co-chairman of the local disabled organization, used his position within the facility where he oversaw certain operations. The court emphasized that such positions of trust do not exempt individuals from legal accountability, particularly regarding crimes against vulnerable children.
