Fobay Emery Johnson, a lecturer at the University of Liberia facing charges in connection with the Ecobank armed robbery case, has asked Criminal Court “A” to delay his trial so he can undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
Johnson’s legal team argues that he has a documented history of mental health challenges, including anxiety and bipolar disorder, for which he takes daily medication. They contend that his condition raises serious concerns about his ability to stand trial and insist the law requires a mental assessment when a defendant’s sanity is questioned.
Prosecutors, however, strongly object to the motion. They argue that Johnson’s past medical records are insufficient to prove he is currently unfit and point to the alleged planning of the robbery as evidence that he was in a sound state of mind.
Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie is expected to deliver a ruling on the request on Friday, September 12.
