New York – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has held a bilateral meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Discussions focused on peace, reconciliation, sustainable development, and Liberia’s new responsibilities as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
Secretary-General Guterres praised Liberia’s long history of hosting refugees and displaced persons, recalling his personal experiences in the country. He congratulated President Boakai on Liberia’s Security Council election and reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s peacebuilding, reconciliation, and development efforts. He noted the UN’s readiness to align its work in Liberia with the government’s priorities, including economic diplomacy, environmental protection, and social development.
President Boakai emphasized Liberia’s stance on peace and justice, including the implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s recommendations and the call for a War and Economic Crimes Court. He also highlighted Liberia’s vast rainforest coverage, stressing the need for stronger international partnerships to protect it.
The Liberian leader outlined his government’s ARREST agenda—covering agriculture, education, health, sanitation, tourism, and youth development—while underscoring transparent management of natural resources for national benefit.
Guterres described Boakai’s vision as forward-looking and pledged continued UN support, including mobilizing international partnerships and resources for Liberia’s programs.
President Boakai thanked the Secretary-General for his sustained engagement with Liberia and reaffirmed the country’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the UN and global partners in pursuit of peace, development, and prosperity.
