Monrovia, Liberia – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), working through the Case Management Pillar under the Ministry of Health, has confirmed four Mpox-related deaths at treatment centers in Monrovia and Buchanan.
NPHIL reports that three of the fatalities occurred at the Starbase Isolation Facility in Monrovia, while the fourth was recorded at the Liberian Government Hospital in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. The cases are being investigated under the Mpox National Incident Management System (IMS).
Medical reports indicate that some of the deceased also suffered from other serious health conditions, including HIV/AIDS and sepsis, which may have worsened their outcomes. These deaths mark Liberia’s first Mpox-related fatalities since the Africa CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak in August 2024. The National Reference Laboratory will conduct genomic sequencing on samples from the patients to aid the investigation.
According to NPHIL, Liberia’s public health surveillance system remains on heightened alert as Mpox cases rise across West Africa. The Institute is strengthening cross-border monitoring, intensifying case searches, and building laboratory capacity to limit human-to-human transmission. Health facilities are also being urged to improve case management in order to reduce further loss of life.
Mpox, a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, is often self-limiting but can become severe in patients with underlying conditions.
As of September 29, 2025, Liberia has recorded 923 confirmed cases, including 169 active cases, 750 recoveries, and four deaths.
NPHIL is urging the public to remain calm, follow preventive measures, and report any suspected symptoms. Citizens are advised to wash hands regularly, avoid contact with suspected cases, and call the national emergency hotline 4455 for assistance.
