Monrovia – Former House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has launched a $4.5 million lawsuit against the Bukonjedeh Group of Companies and its Chief Executive Officer, Elton Johns, accusing them of defamation, economic loss, and emotional distress.
The case, filed before the Civil Law Court for the Sixth Judicial Circuit, Montserrado County, alleges that the defendants made damaging false statements aimed at tarnishing Koffa’s professional reputation and undermining his business relationships.
According to the complaint, the defendants publicly suggested that Koffa engaged in financial misconduct and dishonesty. The lawsuit claims the remarks were made with actual malice and reckless disregard for the truth, resulting in severe harm to his standing both locally and internationally.
Koffa’s lawyers argue that the accusations amount to defamation per se, citing the 1960 case Bakleh v. Greene, 14 LLR 204, which recognizes certain statements as inherently harmful without requiring proof of damages. He further asserts that the statements caused him public ridicule and forced him to cut ties with several partners, leading to significant economic setbacks.
Elton Johns, specifically named in the suit, is accused of making direct references to Koffa with the intent to humiliate and damage him financially. The plaintiff says video and audio recordings will be presented in court as evidence.
Damages Being Sought:
$4 million in special damages for the loss of business opportunities and economic benefits. $500,000 in general damages for emotional trauma, stress, and humiliation.
The suit was filed through the International Law Group, which has asked the court to hold the defendants jointly and severally liable, making each responsible for the full judgment if awarded.
The Civil Law Court has issued a Writ of Summons compelling the defendants to appear and respond. Failure to comply could lead to a default ruling in Koffa’s favor.
Given the prominence of the plaintiff and the scope of the allegations, the lawsuit is expected to attract major public and legal attention.
