The former Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Sylvester Grigsby, was laid to rest on Saturday in Houston, Texas. The funeral service brought together family members, close friends, and senior government officials who came to honor his life and legacy.
Representing President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., his son Joseph Boakai, Jr. delivered a tribute on behalf of the Liberian leader. He reflected on the president’s nearly 60-year friendship with Grigsby, which began during their student years at the College of West Africa in Monrovia.
“Although I was two years ahead of him, Sylvester distinguished himself with his intelligence and strong character,” the president’s tribute read. “In these difficult moments, I find comfort in the memories we built together and the values he embodied. Despite his privileged upbringing, he lived with humility, respect, and compassion. He excelled academically, but it was his empathy and willingness to help others that stood out most.”
President Boakai also recalled Grigsby’s time after leaving office in 2018, when he took on the role of Executive Director of the Joseph N. Boakai Foundation before later returning to government service as Minister of State.
“His life reflected integrity, dedication, and quiet greatness,” the president’s statement continued. “Though some may not have fully understood him, many knew him as a patriot who gave himself tirelessly in the service of his country.”
Opposition leader Alexander B. Cummings also paid his respects, describing Grigsby as a man whose intellect and political insight left a lasting impact.
“His record is a clear testimony of service to Liberia,” Cummings said. “His decision to serve in different administrations, including under President Boakai, was never about political convenience—it was about patriotism. For Sylvester, Liberia was always first.”
Cummings further reflected on their personal bond, noting that beyond public life, Grigsby was a friend, schoolmate, and confidant whose wisdom and kindness shaped those around him.
In her moving tribute, Mrs. Cleopatra Grigsby spoke about the life she shared with her husband since their first meeting in the late 1960s and marriage in 1974.
“Greg’s gentle spirit and kindness drew me to him,” she said. “He was never consumed by power or position. His greatest pride was being a father. He dreamed of a better world and, even when others misused his generosity, he never stopped being kind.”
She added, “Greg gave his life in service to Liberia and his heart to his family and friends. Though his earthly journey has ended, his legacy will remain alive in us all. Thank you, Greg, for your kindness, your love, and your sacrifices.”
