Ceremony Scheduled at Monrovia Central Prison This Morning
MONROVIA – In a significant move tied to Liberia’s 178th Independence Day observance, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has granted executive clemency to seventy-five (75) inmates from various correctional facilities across the country. The clemency is expected to take effect immediately, with a formal release ceremony slated for this morning at the Monrovia Central Prison in Montserrado County.
According to executive sources, the inmates selected have all met the legal and institutional thresholds required under Liberia’s laws for consideration. The act of clemency is being viewed as both a humanitarian gesture and a commitment to ongoing correctional reform under the Boakai administration.
Officials from the Ministry of Justice and the Bureau of Corrections are expected to oversee the official handover, while family members and human rights observers have been invited to witness the occasion.
President Boakai’s move follows a tradition seen under previous administrations, where national holidays, especially Independence Day, serve as moments for reconciliation, reflection, and mercy.

The identities of the released inmates have not yet been disclosed, but sources say the list includes individuals who have served significant portions of their sentences, displayed model behavior, or were incarcerated for non-violent offenses.
This morning’s event marks a powerful moment in Liberia’s national calendar, intertwining freedom with forgiveness as the nation reflects on nearly two centuries of sovereignty.
